Hello Catherine,

Horses are very afraid of trailers, horses are also very claustrophobic, and this is why trailers are so hard for them.  They are dark scary rattling things. Usually when our horses jump in the trailer the noise and the tightness makes them want to jump right back out. When a horse gets claustrophobic and needs to get out of the trailer we need to let them or else we are going to be trapping a very scared prey animal in a metal box on wheels.

What you need to do is teach your horse how to go in the trailer with you on the outside. Then when he goes in he can either turn and come out front ways or back out as may times as he wants. Letting him come out as many times as he wants, is going to build his confidence because you are not forcing him to stay in the trailer. Once you let him go in and out of the trailer for as long as it takes and he sees that you are NOT going to try to trap him in there, he will start getting confident enough to stay in the trailer. See, when you try to keep him in the trailer you are actually making him more claustrophobic and fearful, I know you don’t mean to but that is what it does.

I have a trailer loading DVD that would help you out a lot. I am working with a horse that was only loaded in the trailer once to bring her to my place when she was a baby. In the DVD she is very fearful at first, so you will see how I teach and deal with a horse that is fearful. I teach how to load from outside the trailer where it is safer for you and the horse. I teach how to train the horse to back out calmly and come out front ways calmly; I teach how to teach your horse that the trailer is just a stall on wheels. I know that the DVD would help you a lot to help your horse so that it is not a fight every time you go to the trailer.

The DVD costs $26.50, free shipping. You can order that by going on to my
